Today’s society is constantly presented with everything that you could ever want, need and then some! With the hype of it all, a sense of entitlement is developed and we become ungrateful. We lose sight how fortunate we are, how we have everything we need and with the lack of thankfulness for the things we have, our minds, bodies and souls take the toll.

What is Gratitude?

Gratitude: “The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

…being thankful…show appreciation

Why Does It Matter?

Research have been made on gratitude and its correlation to one’s health. presented the following: “Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman, psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, tested the impact of positive interventions on 411 people… Participants immediately exhibited a huge increase in happiness scores.”

Similar results were found in a case study done by Berkeley. 300 adult participants, who reported clinically low mental health, were given the task to write gratitude letters as well as receive counseling every week. After about 4-12 weeks, participants reported better mental health!

The psychological effects make sense since the act of gratefulness actually effects neurologically. speaks on the positive results found in practicing thankfulness in the workplace. Positive results include: higher job satisfaction, less exhaustion and negative thinking, even fewer illness related call- outs. These positive results are due to the release of the hormones dopamine and serotonin. These two together will have any individual feeling good and wanting to stay feeling good.

It Goes Beyond Our Bodies

Image of The Secret

Recently, I had the opportunity to watch The Secret. I know, I know. I’m like 16 years late lol, but it’s still reliable. For those of you who do not know of The Secret, it is a movie that speaks about the ancient art of the Law of Attraction, how easily attainable it is and it is given from personal accounts of people who gained success from it. In one section they spoke on gratitude. It is one of the easiest things to do and one of the most forgotten. They express that gratitude is the best attitude, because it places you in the right vibration to manifest the life you want. Anything good that you choose to focus on will multiply, hence the Law of Gratitude.

According to, there are 12 known laws to gratitude. Check out their blog post to read the full list. I just wanted to showcase some that resonated deeply within me such as:

  • “Being Always happy won’t always make you grateful, but being grateful will always make you happy.”

-We always tend to think that we have to be happy all the time in this spiritual growth, but that forced on happiness won’t get us anywhere. We won’t feel the same way we do when we resonate in true happiness. That’s being thankful can make you happy because it feels the same. Appreciation and happiness are the same thing. Forcing happiness and gratitude isn’t.

  • “…the highest appreciation is not to simply utter words, but to live by them daily.”

-You have to practice this all the time and mean what you say. It’s not enough to say you are thankful for something one day, not truly feel gratitude towards it and expect a change. You have to express it openly by thanking those who have done something for you, big or small, and keep sharing the good vibes by doing good things for others too!

I Can Vouch For It!

I’ve tried it out myself and saw good things. I can’t say that I have mastered all 12 laws, but just trying it and giving it time made me see the wondrous things gratitude can do for you. Good things that gratitude brought was to the work place was:

  • Increased energy at work
  • People became attracted to my energy
  • Opportunities, small but meaningful, popped up
  • I got to meet wonderful people who shared similar values as me
  • When I shared my finding,  they got the benefits as well
  • My attitude about certain things changed greatly, allowing me to tackle any task that was given without fear.

I can go on forever, but I just want you guys to see that this isn’t just claims and statements made by random websites. This is a real thing that should be done by everyone from any walk of life. Now the task at hand is to implement it to your everyday life. Well, I got that covered for you.
